GCC Countries Agree on Unified EV Charging Standard

The six Gulf Cooperation Council member states have reached a landmark agreement to adopt a unified electric vehicle charging standard across the entire region, removing one of the most significant barriers to cross-border EV travel and signalling a new era of cooperation in sustainable transportation policy. The historic agreement, signed during the GCC Transport Ministers Council meeting in Riyadh, establishes a common technical framework that will apply in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman.

The Combined Charging System version 2, widely known as CCS2, has been selected as the official regional charging standard. This connector type is already the dominant standard in Europe and is supported by the vast majority of global EV manufacturers. The standardisation means that any electric vehicle purchased in or imported to the GCC will be guaranteed compatibility with every public charging station across all six member states.

Beyond physical connector standardisation, the agreement establishes a unified digital payment and authentication system. EV owners will be able to use any public charging station in any GCC country with a single account, a single mobile application, and transparent cross-border pricing. This interoperability eliminates the current fragmented landscape where drivers need separate accounts and applications for different charging networks, even within the same country.

The implementation timeline calls for all new public charging stations installed from 2027 onwards to comply with the unified standard, while existing stations will be retrofitted or upgraded by 2030. The agreement also includes provisions for shared data protocols that will enable real-time availability information, advance booking capabilities, and standardised billing across the region. Industry experts predict this harmonisation will significantly boost cross-border EV travel, particularly along the popular Saudi Arabia to UAE corridor, and encourage more consumers throughout the Gulf to make the switch to electric vehicles.
