2025 Volvo EX90 Review UAE
Battery Spec
The Standard Plus
runs a 104 kWh NMC battery supplied by CATL, delivering 279 hp through a single
rear motor. The Pro Ultra and Performance Ultra step up to a 111 kWh pack with
dual motors producing 408 hp and 517 hp respectively. All variants use a 400-volt
architecture. Usable capacity is approximately 101–107 kWh depending on
variant.
Real-World Range
WLTP-estimated range
spans ~580 km for the Standard Plus, ~600 km for the Pro Ultra, and ~590 km for
the Performance Ultra. Applying the standard UAE deduction of 15–25% for summer
heat and motorway cruising, expect real-world figures of approximately 435–493
km (Plus), 450–510 km (Pro), and 443–501 km (Perf.). Abu Dhabi to Dubai
round-trips are comfortably achievable on a single charge across all variants.
Home Charging
The EX90 charges at
11 kW via Type 2 AC, taking approximately 10 hours for the 104 kWh Plus and 11
hours for the larger 111 kWh Pro or Performance. At DEWA's residential rate of
AED 0.23/kWh, a full charge of the Plus costs approximately AED 23.90. In Abu
Dhabi at the expatriate rate of AED 0.27/kWh, the cost is approximately AED
28.10. Villa owners with overnight charging will start each day near 100%.
Public Fast Charging
DC fast charging at
250 kW CCS2 charges from 10% to 80% in approximately 25–30 minutes. Compatible
UAE networks: DEWA Green Charger, E2GO (ADNOC/TAQA), Tesla Supercharger, UAEV,
and GreenParking. The EX90's CCS2 port is natively compatible with all UAE public
infrastructure — no adapter required.

Volvo EX90 — Battery & Charging
Cabin Comfort
The EX90 seats seven
across three rows. The Plus trim uses a sustainable wool-blend upholstery,
whilst the Ultra and Performance trims upgrade to Nappa leather with ventilated
and heated front seats. The second row provides generous legroom for adults; the
third row suits children or shorter journeys. A heated steering wheel is
standard across all trims.
Driver Comfort
A 14.5-inch portrait
touchscreen dominates the centre stack, paired with a 9-inch digital driver
display and a windscreen-projected head-up display. Electronic air suspension
with adaptive damping is standard on all variants, providing adjustable ride height
for comfort or ground clearance. The Ultra trim adds a front driver massage
seat.
AC Performance
Four-zone climate
control distributes cooling effectively across all three rows — a meaningful
advantage for families in UAE summer conditions. Pre-conditioning via the Volvo
Cars app allows remote cabin cooling before departure. The panoramic fixed glass
roof features UV-filtering tinting to reduce heat soak during peak months.
Luggage
Boot space is 310
litres with all seven seats in use, expanding to 655–689 litres with the third
row folded and approximately 1,915 litres with both rear rows down. A 34-litre
frunk provides secure storage for charging cables or smaller items. V2L capability
enables powering external devices directly from the vehicle.
Infotainment
The 14.5-inch
touchscreen runs Google built-in (Android Automotive OS), providing native
Google Maps navigation, Google Assistant voice control, and Google Play Store
access. Wireless Apple CarPlay is supported; Android Auto is not available as
Google's native system replaces it. Arabic language support is available
through Google's interface settings. The Plus trim includes a 14-speaker Bose
system; Ultra and Performance trims upgrade to a 25-speaker Bowers &
Wilkins system with Dolby Atmos.
Safety
Seven airbags are
standard. The Luminar Iris LiDAR sensor, roof-mounted on every variant,
provides 250-metre forward detection — a segment-leading feature. The ADAS
suite includes AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Pilot Assist
semi-autonomous driving, blind-spot monitoring with steer assist, cross-traffic
alert with auto-brake, run-off road mitigation, and a 360-degree surround
camera. An interior driver-monitoring camera tracks attentiveness.
How Does it Drive?
The Standard Plus
delivers relaxed, near-silent rear-wheel-drive cruising suited to urban and
motorway driving. The dual-motor Pro and Performance trims add confident
all-weather traction. Despite the 2,815 kg kerb weight, the floor-mounted
battery pack lowers the centre of gravity, keeping body roll controlled through
directional changes.
Performance
The Performance
Ultra's 517 hp and 910 Nm deliver a 0–100 km/h time of 4.9 seconds — brisk for
a seven-seat luxury SUV. The Pro Ultra manages 5.9 seconds with 408 hp, and the
Standard Plus covers the sprint in 8.4 seconds with 279 hp. Overtaking at motorway
speeds is decisive across all variants.
Braking
Regenerative braking
is adjustable, and one-pedal driving brings the vehicle to a complete stop. The
blended brake system transitions smoothly between regenerative and friction
braking. Given the vehicle's mass, brake inspection at scheduled service intervals
is recommended.
Autopilot
Pilot Assist
provides Level 2 semi-autonomous driving using adaptive cruise with
stop-and-go, lane centring, and automatic speed adaptation. The Luminar LiDAR
and NVIDIA Orin compute unit are hardware-ready for future Ride Pilot
autonomous capability via over-the-air updates. No Level 3 autonomous driving
is currently active in the UAE market.
Handling
Electronic air
suspension absorbs directional inputs with composure, keeping the EX90 flat
through motorway curves and roundabouts. Steering is light and precise at low
speeds, firming progressively at higher velocities. The 5,037 mm length and
2,985 mm wheelbase are manageable in standard UAE multi-storey car parks.
Ride
The standard air
suspension delivers the most comfortable ride in its class, filtering speed
bumps and rough patches with minimal intrusion into the cabin. Ride height
adjusts automatically based on speed and driving mode. Rear passenger comfort
across all three rows is materially better than comparable combustion-powered
seven-seat SUVs.
Off-Road
The EX90 is designed
primarily for paved roads. The air suspension provides additional ground
clearance in its raised setting, and the AWD variants offer confident traction
on graded desert tracks or gravel roads. Dedicated off-road modes are not
offered. Buyers seeking serious sand or wadi capability should consider
alternatives.
Warranty and After-Sales
Al Futtaim
Automotive covers the EX90 with a 5-year unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty
and an 8-year/160,000 km battery warranty — competitive within the premium EV
segment. Volvo-certified EV technicians operate at service centres in Dubai and
Abu Dhabi. Over-the-air software updates reduce the need for physical service
visits for infotainment and ADAS improvements.
Grey Import vs Official Dealer
Grey-imported EX90
units from Europe or the US may lack UAE-specific software calibration,
regional navigation data, and summer thermal management routines. Insurance
loading is 15–25% above standard; some insurers decline grey-import EVs
entirely. Government incentives — free Salik TAG, green parking bays (4hr
limit), reduced registration fees — apply to official agency vehicles only. The
EX90's LiDAR and ADAS systems require Volvo-certified calibration equipment
inaccessible to grey import owners through Al Futtaim's network.
Cost of Ownership
At AED 286,000 for
the Standard Plus, the EX90 competes directly with the BMW iX xDrive40 and
Mercedes EQE SUV. For a villa-based buyer covering 20,000 km per year with home
charging at DEWA's rate of AED 0.23/kWh, annual electricity cost is estimated
at AED 1,800–2,200 — a fraction of the fuel cost for a comparable petrol
seven-seat SUV. Public DC fast charging at AED 0.90–1.10/kWh is more expensive
but used less frequently by owners with home wallboxes.
Insurance premiums
are estimated at AED 10,000–16,000 annually depending on trim and driver
profile. EV-specific maintenance is minimal — no engine oil, no spark plugs, no
transmission fluid — but air suspension component inspection and brake
servicing remain important given the vehicle's mass. Government incentives
including the free Salik TAG (toll charges of AED 4–6 per gate still apply),
green parking bay access with a four-hour session limit, and reduced RTA
registration fees partially offset running costs.
Depreciation risk is
moderate. Volvo's established brand standing in the UAE and Al Futtaim's dealer
network provide stronger residual support than newer Chinese EV entrants. The
NMC battery chemistry is well-proven but may show marginally higher capacity
fade in extreme heat compared to LFP alternatives. Three-year resale is
estimated at 50–60% of purchase price — in line with European premium SUV
benchmarks.
