2025 Rivian R1S Gen 2 Review UAE
Battery Spec
Four battery
configurations are available. The 92.5 kWh Standard pack uses LFP chemistry —
thermally stable and well-suited to UAE heat. The 108.5 kWh Large and 141.5 kWh
Max packs use Samsung SDI NMC cells for higher energy density. All packs
operate on 400V architecture with liquid thermal management.
Real-World Range
UAE summer
conditions reduce WLTP figures by 15–25%. The Standard pack delivers an
estimated 330–370 km in practice, while the Max pack achieves 455–515 km.
Motorway driving at 120–140 km/h drains the battery faster given the R1S's
tall, bluff-fronted profile. City driving with regenerative braking recovers
closer to claimed figures.
Home Charging
At 11 kW AC, the
Standard pack charges fully in approximately 9.5 hours — an overnight task. The
Max pack requires around 14 hours. At DEWA's rate of AED 0.23/kWh, a full
Standard charge costs approximately AED 21.28; a full Max charge costs AED
32.55. Abu Dhabi expatriate rates (AED 0.27/kWh) push costs to AED 24.98 and
AED 38.21 respectively.
Public Fast Charging
DC fast charging
peaks at 200 kW (Standard LFP) and 220 kW (Large/Max NMC). The critical issue:
US-spec R1S units use CCS1 (2025) or NACS (2026) plugs, while UAE
infrastructure runs on CCS2. A CCS1-to-CCS2 adapter is essential, and
availability is limited. Compatible UAE networks once adapted: DEWA Green
Charger, E2GO, UAEV, and GreenParking. Tesla Superchargers are not compatible.

Rivian R1S Gen 2 — Battery & Charging
Cabin Comfort
The R1S seats seven
across three rows. Second-row legroom is generous for adults; the third row
suits children or shorter adults on shorter journeys. The cabin uses vegan
leather and sustainably-sourced wood trim. Door storage is ample, and the
centre console houses a large covered bin.
Driver Comfort
The elevated SUV
driving position provides strong forward and lateral visibility. The 15.6-inch
centre touchscreen is clear in direct sunlight. A 12.3-inch digital instrument
cluster displays speed, range, and navigation data. Steering column adjusts for
rake and reach.
AC Performance
Tri-zone climate
control is standard, with separate controls for the third row. Remote
pre-conditioning is available via the Rivian app. Heated and ventilated front
seats are standard on higher trims. The panoramic glass roof does not open but
benefits from UV-blocking tinted glass — aftermarket UV film is still
recommended for UAE conditions.
Luggage
With the third row
upright, boot space is 498 litres — adequate for weekly shopping. Folding the
third row opens 1,376 litres. A lockable front trunk (frunk) provides
approximately 300 litres of additional weatherproof storage. V2L
vehicle-to-load power is not currently supported.
Infotainment
The 15.6-inch centre
touchscreen runs Rivian's proprietary operating system. Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto are not supported — Rivian has confirmed no plans to add them.
Built-in Spotify, TuneIn, and Amazon Alexa voice control are standard. Arabic
language support is not available on US-spec units. Over-the-air software
updates are delivered regularly.
Safety
Eight airbags are
standard, including curtain protection across all three rows and overhead
rollover airbags — a segment first. The ADAS suite (Driver+) includes adaptive
cruise, lane centring, AEB, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert,
and a 360-degree camera system. Gear Guard perimeter security cameras are
standard. IIHS awarded the R1S Top Safety Pick+ in the USA; Euro NCAP testing
has not been conducted.
How Does it Drive?
Quad-motor torque
vectoring provides precise control on both tarmac and sand. The air suspension
adjusts ride height from 221 mm (highway) to 378 mm (off-road maximum). Forward
visibility from the elevated seating position is excellent; the 360-degree camera
assists with the R1S's substantial 5.1-metre length in tight spaces.
Performance
The Ascend
Quad-Motor reaches 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds — supercar territory from a
three-tonne SUV. Even the entry Adventure Standard delivers 4.6 seconds.
Motorway overtaking at 120 km/h is effortless across all variants. Wind noise
at highway speeds is moderate given the tall body profile.
Braking
Regenerative braking
is adjustable with multiple intensity levels. One-pedal driving is available
and brings the vehicle to a full stop. Hydraulic brake feel is confident and
predictable, essential given the vehicle's substantial kerb weight of nearly three
tonnes.
Autopilot
Driver+ provides
hands-on highway assist with adaptive cruise and lane centring as standard on
all variants. The system performs reliably on well-marked UAE motorways such as
the E11 and Sheikh Zayed Road. Autonomy+ (hands-free highway driving) is available
as a subscription but requires Rivian's US infrastructure for updates and
activation — functionality in the UAE is unconfirmed.
Handling
Despite its
2,931–3,090 kg kerb weight, the low-mounted battery pack keeps the centre of
gravity below that of comparable petrol SUVs. Air suspension firms in Sport
mode for reduced body roll. At 1,963 mm tall, the R1S clears standard 2.1 m
multi-storey car park barriers with minimal margin — caution is required with
roof accessories.
Ride
The air suspension
delivers a composed, pliant ride over UAE motorway surfaces. Damping adapts
automatically to road conditions. Rear passengers in the second row benefit
from a flat floor and minimal drivetrain intrusion. Third-row ride comfort is
acceptable for shorter journeys.
Off-Road
Ground clearance
extends to 378 mm in its highest setting — outstanding for desert driving and
wadi crossings. Rivian quotes a wading depth of 900 mm. Individual motor
control across all four wheels (Quad-Motor) provides precise traction
management on sand, rock, and gravel. Rally, Drift, and Conservation terrain
modes are accessible from the touchscreen. The R1S is one of the most capable
off-road EVs available globally.
Warranty and After-Sales
Rivian offers a
US-market warranty of four to five years (50,000–60,000 miles) for the vehicle
and eight years (120,000–175,000 miles) for the battery and drivetrain.
However, Rivian has no service centres, authorised dealers, or parts
distribution in the UAE. Grey import owners must rely on independent EV
workshops such as Legend Auto Services in Al Quoz, Dubai. Parts sourcing is
from the US, with lead times of two to six weeks for non-stock components.
Grey Import vs Official Dealer
All UAE R1S units
are grey imports from North America. The US-spec CCS1 or NACS charging plug
requires a CCS2 adapter for UAE DC fast charging infrastructure — an essential
purchase that adds AED 1,500–3,000. Insurance loading for grey import EVs
without official UAE representation is typically 20–30% above standard rates.
UAE government EV incentives — free Salik tag, green parking bays, reduced
registration fees — may not apply to grey import vehicles without official
agency backing. Software updates require a US-based Rivian account and active
connectivity subscription.
Cost of Ownership
At an estimated AED
285,000 for the entry Adventure Standard, the R1S undercuts the Tesla Model X
by AED 60,000–100,000 while offering genuine seven-seat and off-road
capability. For a buyer covering 20,000 km per year with a home wall box,
annual electricity cost is approximately AED 1,400–1,800, versus AED
9,000–13,000 for a comparable petrol SUV. Combined running cost savings are
estimated at AED 7,000–11,000 annually.
Insurance estimates
through UAE grey import channels range from AED 14,000 to AED 25,000 annually,
depending on variant and insurer. Annual EV servicing through independent
workshops is approximately AED 2,500–4,000. Government incentives including the
free Salik tag (toll charges of AED 4–6 per gate still apply), green parking
bay access with a four-hour session limit, and reduced RTA registration fees
may not be available to grey import owners.
Depreciation risk is
elevated. Without official UAE distribution, resale depends entirely on the
grey import market. Rivian's brand recognition in the GCC is limited compared
to Tesla or BMW. Three-year residual values are difficult to forecast — estimated
at 45–55% of purchase price, materially below officially distributed
competitors. Should Rivian establish an official GCC presence, early grey
import values could shift unpredictably.
