2026 Nissan Leaf Review UAE
Battery Spec
Two NMC lithium-ion
packs are available: a 52 kWh unit (49.4 kWh usable) in the Standard Range, and
a 75 kWh unit in the Long Range. Both are liquid-cooled — a first for the Leaf
nameplate, directly addressing the thermal degradation issues that plagued earlier
air-cooled generations. The battery supplier is Envision AESC, and the
cell-to-pack integration benefits from the CMF-EV platform's flat floor
architecture.
Real-World Range
Applying DriveEV's
standard 15–25% UAE derating for ambient heat and AC load, expect approximately
330–375 km from the 52 kWh variant and 465–530 km from the 75 kWh in mixed
driving. Motorway cruising at 120–140 km/h in summer will push consumption
toward the lower end. The Long Range variant comfortably covers a Dubai-to-Abu
Dhabi return journey without charging — a significant practical advantage over
the base model.
Home Charging
The 7.2 kW onboard
charger replenishes the 52 kWh battery in approximately eight hours and the 75
kWh in around eleven hours via a Type 2 wall box. At DEWA's residential rate of
AED 0.23/kWh, a full charge costs AED 11.96 (52 kWh) or AED 17.25 (75 kWh). In
Abu Dhabi at the expatriate ADDC rate of AED 0.27/kWh, costs rise to AED 14.04
and AED 20.25 respectively. Overnight charging on the Long Range model is
feasible with a pre-10pm plug-in.
Public Fast Charging
The 52 kWh variant
supports DC fast charging at up to 105 kW, while the 75 kWh variant reaches 150
kW via CCS2. Both achieve 10–80% in approximately 35 minutes. Compatible UAE
networks include DEWA Green Charger, E2GO (ADNOC/TAQA), UAEV, Tesla Supercharger
(via CCS2 adapter where available), and GreenParking. The 150 kW ceiling on the
Long Range model is competitive with the Hyundai Kona Electric's 100 kW peak.
2026
Nissan Leaf — Battery & Charging
Cabin Comfort
The crossover body
delivers a significant interior volume increase over the outgoing hatchback.
Front seats offer adequate bolstering for daily driving, with available heating
on higher trims. The 2,690 mm wheelbase provides respectable rear legroom for two
adults. Material quality is a step up from the previous generation, with
soft-touch surfaces across the upper dashboard and door cards.
Driver Comfort
The driving position
sits higher than the old Leaf, offering improved forward visibility that suits
UAE highway driving. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and either a
12.3-inch or 14.3-inch central touchscreen (trim-dependent) form a clean
dual-screen cockpit. The steering column adjusts for rake and reach. An
available head-up display projects speed and navigation onto the windscreen on
upper trims.
AC Performance
Dual-zone automatic
climate control is standard. The heat pump system — standard on all variants —
improves cabin heating and cooling efficiency, reducing the range penalty from
climate control in extreme UAE summer temperatures. Remote pre-conditioning via
the NissanConnect app allows the cabin to cool while still plugged in,
preserving battery charge for driving.
Luggage
Boot capacity is 566
litres with the rear seats upright, expanding to 1,572 litres with seats folded
— competitive with the Hyundai Kona Electric (466 L) and significantly ahead of
the BYD Atto 3 (440 L). No frunk is available; the front section is occupied by
motor and ancillary hardware. An optional Divide-N-Hide cargo organiser
provides flexible under-floor storage.
Infotainment
The NissanConnect
system runs on a 12.3-inch touchscreen (base) or 14.3-inch unit (upper trims),
with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Google Built-in with
Google Assistant and Google Maps is available on higher variants. Arabic language
support is expected through NissanConnect, though full native Arabic UI
localisation should be confirmed at the dealer. The available Bose Personal
Plus 10-speaker system includes headrest-mounted speakers.
Safety
The Gen 3 Leaf has
not yet been tested by Euro NCAP under current protocols. Standard ADAS
includes Nissan ProPILOT Assist (adaptive cruise control with lane centring),
forward automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection,
blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and an around-view monitor. An
estimated eight to ten airbags are fitted including curtain, knee, and
side-impact units. The previous-generation Leaf scored five stars under 2018
Euro NCAP protocols.
How Does it Drive?
The CMF-EV platform
delivers a lower centre of gravity than comparable ICE crossovers, contributing
to confident cornering on UAE interchange ramps. The transition from the old
Leaf hatchback to this crossover is immediately apparent — the ride is more composed,
road noise is better isolated, and the steering has improved weighting and
feedback.
Performance
The Standard Range
covers 0–100 km/h in 8.3 seconds with 174 hp and 345 Nm — adequate for urban
commuting and motorway merging. The Long Range improves to 7.6 seconds with 215
hp and 355 Nm. Both variants are front-wheel drive with a PMSM electric motor.
Top speed is electronically limited to 160 km/h across the range.
Braking
Nissan's e-Pedal
one-pedal driving system is carried over, allowing full regenerative braking to
a standstill. In urban UAE driving, e-Pedal significantly reduces brake wear
and simplifies stop-start traffic. Conventional disc brakes provide reassuring
pedal feel under hard braking.
Autopilot
ProPILOT Assist
combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assistance on marked
highways. The system maintains a set following distance and keeps the vehicle
centred in its lane on the E11, E311, and other well-marked UAE motorways.
Hands-on-wheel detection ensures driver engagement. It is a Level 2 system —
full attention remains required at all times.
Handling
MacPherson strut
front suspension and an independent multi-link rear deliver a 66% increase in
lateral stiffness over the outgoing model. The Leaf corners flat through
roundabouts and handles mid-corner bumps without unsettling the chassis. The
wider 1,810 mm body and 2,690 mm wheelbase provide a stable platform for lane
changes at highway speed.
Ride
The multi-link rear
suspension filters road imperfections effectively. Expansion joints and speed
bumps are absorbed without sharp impacts reaching the cabin. The ride quality
is compliant without feeling floaty — a good balance for UAE mixed-surface conditions
including compacted gravel and concrete motorway surfaces.
Off-Road
With 135 mm of
ground clearance and front-wheel drive only, the Leaf is not intended for
serious off-road use. It handles compacted gravel tracks and shallow sand
crossings typical of UAE desert-edge developments, but deep sand, wadi
crossings, and dune driving are beyond its capability. No AWD option is
available at launch.
Warranty and After-Sales
Nissan UAE offers a
five-year unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty with five-year roadside
assistance. Battery warranty is eight years or 160,000 km — matching the
coverage offered by BYD, Hyundai, and Kia on competing models. Service
intervals are every 10,000 km or six months. Arabian Automobiles and Al Masaood
maintain extensive workshop networks across all seven emirates, which is a
strong advantage for after-sales convenience.
Grey Import vs Official Dealer
The Leaf Gen 3 may
appear through grey import channels with US-spec NACS charging ports or
Japanese-spec CHAdeMO connectors, neither of which is compatible with the UAE's
CCS2 public charging network. Warranty coverage, ProPILOT calibration, and
NissanConnect connectivity may also differ on non-GCC units.
Cost of Ownership
At AED 128,000 for
the Standard Range, the Leaf is one of the most affordable new BEVs in the UAE
— undercutting the Hyundai Kona Electric by approximately AED 5,000–10,000.
Monthly charging costs on home power run approximately AED 40–60 depending on
daily commute distance. EVs in the UAE benefit from a free Salik TAG, green
parking bays (four-hour limit), and reduced vehicle registration fees.
Insurance premiums
for the Leaf are expected to align with C-segment crossover rates —
approximately 2.5–3.5% of vehicle value annually. Nissan's established parts
supply chain and workshop availability should keep maintenance costs
competitive. Tyre replacement costs are moderate given the 17-inch to 19-inch
range (trim-dependent).
Depreciation risk is
moderate. The previous-generation Leaf suffered significant resale value loss,
partly due to air-cooled battery degradation concerns. The Gen 3's
liquid-cooled NMC battery and eight-year warranty directly address this issue.
Nissan's established UAE presence through Arabian Automobiles and Al Masaood
supports residual values. The Long Range variant at AED 155,000 offers stronger
resale prospects due to its competitive 622 km WLTP range. Three-year resale is
estimated at 55–65% of purchase price.
