2025 Hyundai Kona Electric Review UAE
Battery Spec
The entry 39 kWh
variant uses a lithium-ion NMC battery with a claimed WLTP range of 289–305 km.
The 64 kWh battery lifts that figure to 450–484 km, making it one of the
longest-range compact BEVs available in the UAE below AED 150,000. Both packs
are liquid-cooled and mounted beneath the cabin floor, lowering the centre of
gravity and improving handling stability.
Real-World Range
UAE summer
conditions reduce the Kona Electric's range by approximately 15–25%. The 64 kWh
variant should deliver 360–410 km in cooler months and 340–380 km in peak
summer with AC running. The 39 kWh variant drops to approximately 220–260 km.
Highway cruising at 120–140 km/h between Dubai and Abu Dhabi consumes range
more aggressively than city driving, where regenerative braking recovers
meaningful energy.
Home Charging
On a standard 11 kW
villa wall box, the 64 kWh Kona Electric charges from empty to full in
approximately seven to nine hours — comfortably overnight. The 39 kWh variant
completes a full charge in around six hours. At DEWA's residential rate of AED
0.23/kWh, a full 64 kWh charge costs approximately AED 14.70. In Abu Dhabi at
the expatriate rate of AED 0.27/kWh, the same charge costs approximately AED
17.28.
Public Fast Charging
The 64 kWh variant
accepts DC fast charging at up to 100 kW via CCS2, reaching 10–80% in
approximately 41 minutes. The 39 kWh variant peaks at 72 kW with a similar
10–80% time of around 47 minutes. Compatible UAE networks include DEWA Green
Charger, E2GO (ADNOC/TAQA — including the E11 Saih Shuaib hub), UAEV across the
Northern Emirates, and GreenParking. Tesla Supercharger access requires a CCS
adapter where supported.

Hyundai Kona Electric — Battery & Charging
Cabin Comfort
The Kona Electric's
cabin accommodates four adults comfortably and a fifth at a squeeze. Rear
legroom is adequate for the B/C-segment class but not generous — taller
passengers may find it tight on longer drives. Material quality has improved
over the first generation, with soft-touch surfaces on the upper dashboard and
door panels. Storage includes a flat centre console with a deep tray and
wireless phone charging pad.
Driver Comfort
The driving position
benefits from good forward visibility and a logically arranged cockpit. The
dual 12.3-inch screen layout — one for the digital instrument cluster and one
for infotainment — sits cleanly across the dashboard. Steering adjusts for rake
and reach. The flat battery floor creates a level cabin with no transmission
tunnel intrusion, improving front-row spaciousness.
AC Performance
The Kona Electric's
heat pump system improves efficiency in extreme temperatures. Cabin cool-down
from a midday UAE sun-soak takes approximately four to six minutes to reach
comfortable levels. Remote pre-cooling via the Bluelink app is available,
allowing cabin conditioning before entering the vehicle. Ventilated front seats
are offered on higher trim levels, a meaningful addition in Gulf summer
conditions.
Luggage
Boot space is rated
at 466 litres with the rear seats upright — competitive for the class and
sufficient for weekly shopping or two medium suitcases. Folding the 60:40 split
rear seats extends capacity to approximately 1,300 litres. A small 27-litre
frunk provides additional storage for charging cables or small items.
Infotainment
The dual 12.3-inch
display setup runs Hyundai's latest ccNC infotainment software. Wireless Apple
CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across all trims. Arabic language support
is available in the infotainment system. Over-the-air updates keep the navigation
and software current. Bluelink connected services enable remote climate
control, charge scheduling, and vehicle status monitoring via smartphone.
Safety
Euro NCAP awarded
the Kona Electric four stars in 2023. Standard safety equipment includes
forward collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keeping
assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a reversing
camera. Higher trims add a 360-degree surround-view camera and highway driving
assist (Level 2). Six airbags are standard across the range.
How Does it Drive?
The Kona Electric
delivers a refined, quiet driving experience typical of modern BEVs. The low
battery placement gives it a planted feel through corners, and the electric
motor's instant torque makes city driving effortless. Visibility is good in all
directions, aided by slim A-pillars and a relatively upright greenhouse.
Performance
The 64 kWh variant
reaches 100 km/h in approximately 7.5–7.9 seconds — more than adequate for UAE
highway merging and overtaking. At 120 km/h on Sheikh Zayed Road, wind and road
noise remain well-managed for the segment. The 39 kWh variant at 9.9 seconds is
noticeably slower and better suited to purely urban duties.
Braking
Regenerative braking
is adjustable via steering-wheel paddles, offering four levels from minimal
coast to strong one-pedal driving. The i-Pedal mode enables full one-pedal
driving, bringing the car to a complete stop without touching the brake pedal.
Brake feel is progressive and predictable at all speeds.
Autopilot
Hyundai SmartSense
provides adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability on higher trims.
Lane-centring assist works in conjunction with the adaptive cruise to offer
Level 2 highway assistance. The system performs competently on well-marked UAE
motorways, though it requires the driver to maintain hands on the wheel.
Handling
The Kona Electric
handles roundabouts and interchanges with confidence. The low centre of gravity
from the floor-mounted battery reduces body roll. At 4,355 mm in length, it
manoeuvres easily in tight multi-storey car parks and mall parking structures.
Turning circle is competitive for the class.
Ride
The MacPherson strut
front and multi-link rear suspension delivers a comfortable ride over typical
UAE road surfaces. Expansion joints and speed bumps are absorbed without
harshness. At highway speeds, the ride settles into a composed cruise. The
additional weight of the battery pack helps damp out minor imperfections.
Warranty and After-Sales
Juma Al Majid Est.
covers the Kona Electric with a five-year or 100,000 km vehicle warranty and an
eight-year or 160,000 km battery warranty. Hyundai's UAE service network
includes centres in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Al Ain. Parts availability
is strong — the Kona Electric shares components with the wider Hyundai range,
and the brand has operated in the UAE for decades. Service intervals are
typically every 15,000 km or 12 months.
Grey Import vs Official Dealer
Grey import Kona
Electric units from Korea or Europe may lack GCC-specification climate
calibration, Arabic navigation data, and summer-optimised battery thermal
management settings. Insurance loading for grey imports runs 15–25% above
official-channel premiums, with some insurers declining BEV grey imports
altogether. UAE government incentives — free Salik tag, green parking bays,
reduced registration fees — apply to officially imported vehicles only.
Cost of Ownership
Starting from AED
81,000, the Kona Electric is one of the most affordable BEVs in the UAE. For a
buyer covering 20,000 km per year with home charging, annual electricity cost
is estimated at approximately AED 1,000–1,400 using DEWA's residential rate — versus
AED 6,000–8,000 for a comparable petrol crossover. Combined annual savings
exceed AED 5,000 in fuel costs alone.
Insurance through
official channels is estimated at AED 4,000–6,000 annually. EV servicing is
simpler and less frequent than ICE equivalents, with annual service costs
estimated at AED 1,000–1,500. Government incentives include a free Salik tag
(toll charges of AED 4–6 per gate still apply), green parking bay access with a
four-hour session limit, and reduced RTA registration fees.
Depreciation risk is
moderate-to-low. Hyundai is an established brand in the UAE with proven resale
demand, and the Kona Electric's competitive pricing limits the absolute
depreciation exposure. NMC battery chemistry is well-proven, and Hyundai's
eight-year battery warranty provides confidence in long-term ownership.
Three-year resale value is estimated at 55–65% of purchase price.
