2025 BYD Yangwang U8 Review UAE
Battery Spec
The U8 carries a
49.05 kWh BYD Blade LFP battery mounted beneath the cabin floor. The U8L
receives a larger 55.53 kWh pack. Blade LFP's cell-to-pack architecture offers
strong thermal stability for sustained UAE heat. The 2.0-litre turbocharged
four-cylinder functions exclusively as a generator — it has no mechanical
connection to the wheels — feeding electricity to the battery or motors as
demand requires.
Real-World Range
Electric-only WLTP
range sits at approximately 112 km for the standard U8. In UAE summer
conditions under full AC load, expect 85–95 km of pure electric driving.
Combined range with the 75-litre fuel tank reaches approximately 800 km (WLTP),
translating to 650–700 km in real-world UAE driving. Highway consumption at
120–140 km/h draws heavily on the range extender due to the 3,460 kg kerb
weight and upright body profile.
Home Charging
At 11 kW AC via Type
2, a full charge completes in approximately four hours on a villa wall box. At
DEWA's residential rate of AED 0.23/kWh, a full charge costs approximately AED
11.28. In Abu Dhabi at the expatriate rate of AED 0.27/kWh, the cost is approximately
AED 13.24. Given the limited electric-only range, most buyers will rely on the
range extender for longer journeys and reserve electric mode for urban driving.
Public Fast Charging
DC fast charging at
up to 110 kW CCS2 charges from 10% to 80% in approximately 23 minutes.
Compatible UAE networks include DEWA Green Charger, E2GO (including the E11
Saih Shuaib hub), UAEV across the Northern Emirates, and GreenParking. The U8
is not compatible with Tesla Superchargers. The EREV architecture means DC
charging is less critical than for BEV owners — the petrol range extender
eliminates range anxiety entirely.

Yangwang U8 — Battery & Charging
Cabin Comfort
Nappa leather
upholstery with Sapele wood and Alcantara trim defines the cabin. Front and
rear seats feature heating, ventilation, and multi-point massage. The U8L
extends the wheelbase by 200 mm and adopts a 2+2+2 six-seat layout with
executive zero-gravity second-row seats. Rear legroom in the standard five-seat
U8 is generous; the U8L's individual rear thrones with headrest speakers
elevate it to first-class territory.
Driver Comfort
The elevated driving
position provides commanding visibility across UAE motorways. An eight-way
electric driver's seat with memory adjusts to a wide range of body types.
Steering adjusts for rake and reach. The 70-inch AR head-up display projects
speed, navigation, and ADAS data directly into the driver's line of sight,
reducing the need to glance at screens.
AC Performance
Multi-zone climate
control cools the cabin from extreme UAE midday temperatures within five to
seven minutes. Remote pre-cooling via the BYD app is standard — essential when
the vehicle has been parked in direct sunlight. Ventilated seats across all
rows are standard. The panoramic sunroof features auto-dimming glass;
additional UV tinting is recommended for the UAE's sustained solar load. A
PM2.5 air filter with a smart aroma system maintains cabin air quality.
Luggage
Boot space is 1,031
litres with all seats upright, expanding to 2,050 litres with the rear bench
folded. The U8L offers 1,115 litres maximum. V2L power export delivers up to 6
kW externally, capable of sustaining camping equipment or power tools for up to
25 hours. A dual-mode fridge/freezer (-6°C to 50°C) is integrated into the
centre console.
Infotainment
The cockpit features
a 23.6-inch Mini-LED instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch OLED central display, and
a 23.6-inch passenger entertainment screen. Arabic language navigation is
supported on the DiLink system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not natively
supported — aftermarket wireless adapters are required. A 22-speaker Dynaudio
Platinum system with Dolby Atmos is standard on the U8; the U8L upgrades to 32
speakers. Over-the-air updates and 50 W wireless phone charging with cooling
are standard.
Safety
Three roof-mounted
LiDARs, five millimetre-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and 13 cameras form
a 38-sensor ADAS network processed by an NVIDIA DRIVE Orin chip. Standard
features include AEB, adaptive cruise with stop-and-go, lane-keep assist,
blind-spot detection, and a 360-degree holographic imaging system. The U8L
upgrades to the DiPilot 600 system with 18 cameras and city-level NOA. Euro
NCAP has not tested any Yangwang model at the time of writing.
How Does it Drive?
Despite weighing
3,460 kg, the U8 moves with startling urgency when required and near-silent
composure in electric cruise mode. The range extender remains inaudible at
urban speeds and only becomes perceptible under sustained motorway load.
Forward visibility from the elevated seat is excellent; the bonnet camera
assists with close-quarter manoeuvres.
Performance
The 0–100 km/h
sprint in 3.6 seconds places the U8 alongside supercars — delivered from a
three-and-a-half-tonne SUV. Overtaking on Sheikh Zayed Road or the E11 is
instantaneous. Wind noise at 120 km/h is well managed for a vehicle of this
size. The Off-road Master variant is marginally slower at 3.9 seconds due to
additional hardware weight; the U8L reaches 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds flat.
Braking
Regenerative braking
distributes across all four motors independently. One-pedal driving is
available with adjustable regen intensity. The tyre blowout stabilisation
system — unique to the U8 — automatically redistributes torque across the
remaining three motors during a high-speed puncture, maintaining directional
stability without driver intervention.
Autopilot
Level 2 adaptive
cruise with stop-and-go functions reliably on well-marked UAE motorways. Lane
centring is confident on the E11 and E311 corridors. The U8L's DiPilot 600 adds
high-speed and city NOA capability with enhanced sensor coverage. No Level 3 autonomous
function is currently offered in the UAE market.
Handling
The 360-degree tank
turn — rotating the entire vehicle on its own axis — is the U8's signature
feature. In practical terms, it reduces a turning circle that would otherwise
challenge multi-storey car parks and tight compound gates. At 1,930 mm tall and
2,050 mm wide, the U8 will not fit in standard 2.1 m multi-storey structures.
Low-speed manoeuvrability with the 360-degree camera and tank-turn assist is
otherwise excellent.
Ride
The DiSus-P
intelligent hydraulic suspension continuously adjusts damping in real time.
Ride quality on UAE's smooth urban tarmac is limousine-grade, absorbing speed
bumps and expansion joints with composure. Body roll through high-speed
sweepers is minimal for a vehicle of this mass. The system raises ground
clearance by up to 150 mm when off-road modes are engaged.
Off-Road
Ground clearance
starts at 285 mm and extends to 435 mm with DiSus-P fully raised. Wading depth
is rated at 1,000 mm — the Off-road Master adds a snorkel extending this to
1,400 mm. The emergency float mode activates automatically in deep water,
raising the suspension, sealing the cabin, and propelling the vehicle at
approximately 3 km/h using wheel rotation. Over 15 terrain modes cover sand,
rock, mud, and snow. Desert dune capability is genuine given the independent
torque vectoring across all four wheels.
Warranty and After-Sales
Al-Futtaim
Automotive covers the Yangwang U8 with a six-year or 150,000 km vehicle
warranty and an eight-year unlimited-kilometre battery warranty — a strong
commitment for a first-generation luxury platform. Service centres are
established in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, though the Yangwang-specific technician
pool is still developing. EREV service intervals include range-extender engine
oil changes alongside standard EV system checks, making maintenance slightly
more complex than for pure BEV models.
Grey Import vs Official Dealer
Grey import Yangwang
U8 units sourced from China typically run GB/T charging connectors incompatible
with UAE public CCS2 infrastructure. Software calibration, Arabic navigation,
and UAE-specific thermal management profiles may be absent. Insurance loading
is 15–25% above official-channel rates; some insurers decline coverage for
grey-import ultra-luxury EVs entirely. Government incentives — free Salik tag,
green parking, reduced registration fees — apply to official agency vehicles
only.
Cost of Ownership
At AED 650,900, the
U8 undercuts the Mercedes-AMG G63 (from approximately AED 800,000+) and sits
competitively against a loaded Range Rover Autobiography. For a buyer covering
20,000 km per year primarily in electric mode around the city, annual electricity
cost is estimated at AED 2,000–2,500. Combined-mode driving with the range
extender raises this to approximately AED 5,000–7,000 annually — still
significantly below a petrol V8 SUV consuming 18–22 L/100 km.
Insurance estimates
for the U8 through official UAE channels range from AED 18,000 to AED 25,000
annually given the vehicle's value. Annual service costs are estimated at AED
4,000–6,000 accounting for EREV complexity. Government incentives include a free
Salik tag (toll charges of AED 4–6 per gate still apply), green parking bay
access with a four-hour session limit, and reduced RTA registration fees.
Depreciation risk is
elevated. Yangwang is a first-generation luxury brand with no resale track
record in the UAE. Al-Futtaim's backing provides some residual confidence, but
three-year resale values are highly uncertain. Blade LFP chemistry resists thermal
degradation better than NMC equivalents, which supports battery longevity.
Early adopters should budget for higher depreciation than established marques
like Mercedes-Benz or Land Rover.
