2025 BYD Shark 6 Review UAE
Battery Spec
The Shark 6 runs on
a 29.58 kWh BYD Blade LFP battery, mounted beneath the cabin floor. Blade LFP's
cell-to-pack architecture provides strong thermal stability — a meaningful
advantage in UAE ambient temperatures. The 1.5T petrol engine does not drive the
wheels directly; it functions as a range extender under demand. Total system
output is 430 hp and 650 Nm, with a claimed combined WLTP range of
approximately 520 km.
Real-World Range
Electric-only range
in UAE conditions falls to 70–80 km in mild months and 65–75 km in summer under
full AC load. Motorway driving at 120–140 km/h reduces range further due to the
truck body's aerodynamic profile. City-cycle electric driving holds closer to
the upper estimate. On a depleted battery, estimated combined consumption is
6–8 L/100 km — well below a comparable diesel ute.
Home Charging
The Shark 6 charges
at 7 kW via Type 2 AC, taking four to five hours for a full charge on a
standard villa wall box. At DEWA's residential rate of AED 0.23/kWh, a full
charge costs approximately AED 6.80. In Abu Dhabi at the expatriate rate of AED
0.27/kWh, the cost is approximately AED 7.99. The Shark 6 is best suited to
buyers with access to a private wall box or villa parking.
Public Fast Charging
DC fast charging at
55 kW CCS2 charges from 10% to 80% in approximately 22–25 minutes. Compatible
UAE networks: DEWA Green Charger, E2GO (including the E11 Saih Shuaib hub),
UAEV (Northern Emirates), and GreenParking. The Shark 6 is not compatible with
Tesla Superchargers and does not benefit from chargers rated above 55 kW.

Cabin Comfort
Front seats are
leather with ventilation and heating. Rear legroom is adequate for two adults
on shorter journeys; the rear bench is heated but lacks recline. Dashboard
contact zones use soft-touch materials. Door pockets accommodate 1.5-litre
bottles, and under-seat rear storage provides a lockable secure area.
Driver Comfort
The elevated driving
position provides clear forward visibility on UAE motorways. The 15.6-inch
rotating touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital cluster are readable in direct
sunlight. A head-up display projects speed and navigation data. Steering column
adjusts for both rake and reach.
AC Performance
Dual-zone climate
control cools the cabin from above 55°C to a comfortable temperature within
five to seven minutes — competitive with petrol utes. Remote pre-cooling via
the BYD app is standard. Ventilated front seats work well in stop-start
traffic; rear seat cooling is not fitted. UV film for the panoramic sunroof is
recommended given the UAE's solar load.
Luggage
The pickup bed is
approximately 1,480 mm long — adequate for building materials or overland gear.
V2L power export provides up to 6 kW externally for tools or camp equipment. No
frunk is available; the front section houses the electric motor and drivetrain
hardware.
Infotainment
The 15.6-inch
rotating touchscreen supports full Arabic language navigation — an important
differentiator in the UAE. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are
standard. The system displays EV range, petrol range, and battery state
simultaneously. Over-the-air updates are supported. A 12-speaker audio system
and dual wireless charging pads are included.
Safety
Eight airbags
including curtain protection are standard. The ADAS suite covers AEB, lane-keep
assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a 360-degree
surround camera. Adaptive cruise with stop-and-go is standard. Euro NCAP
testing for the 2025 Shark 6 has not been published at the time of writing.
How Does it Drive?
Electric torque from
standstill makes roundabout exits and filter merges effortless. The transition
between electric and petrol-assist is smooth under moderate throttle. Forward
visibility from the elevated seat is strong; rear three-quarter visibility is
limited by the dual-cab body, making the 360-degree camera essential.
Performance
The 0–100 km/h
sprint in 5.7 seconds is rapid for a 2,600 kg pickup. Overtaking at 100 km/h is
decisive. Wind noise at 120 km/h is moderate — the truck body's aerodynamics
are honest about its shape. The petrol engine is audible under hard
acceleration but retreats at cruising speeds.
Braking
Regenerative braking
is adjustable via paddle shifters. One-pedal driving is available but does not
bring the vehicle to a full stop without brake pedal input, given the vehicle's
mass. Hydraulic brake feel is consistent across electric and combined drive
modes.
Autopilot
Adaptive cruise with
stop-and-go functions reliably on the E11 and Sheikh Zayed Road. Lane centring
performs well on clearly-marked motorways but requests driver input on older
Northern Emirates roads. No Level 3 autonomous capability is offered.
Handling
DiSus-E intelligent
electric suspension adjusts damping in real time, keeping body roll controlled
through motorway curves. Multi-storey car parks with standard 2.1 m height
clearance are inaccessible. Rear-axle steering assists low-speed
manoeuvrability. The 360-degree camera is an essential urban aid.
Ride
Over the UAE's
predominantly smooth urban roads, the Shark 6 rides with car-like composure. An
unladen bed introduces secondary bounce on rough surfaces, inherent to
body-on-frame architecture. Rear passenger comfort is materially better than
comparable diesel utes.
Off-Road
Terrain modes —
Sand, Mud, Rock — are accessible from the touchscreen. Ground clearance is
approximately 210 mm. The Off-Road Kit adds enhanced tyres and underbody
protection for demanding desert use. BYD's quoted wading depth of 800 mm is
competitive for wadi crossings. Crab-walk mode assists precise placement in
tight rocky terrain.
Warranty and After-Sales
Al Futtaim Electric
Mobility covers the Shark 6 with a six-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty and
an eight-year or 160,000 km battery warranty — above the regional average for
this class. BYD-certified high-voltage technicians are established at Dubai and
Abu Dhabi service centres. PHEV service intervals include petrol engine
maintenance alongside standard EV system checks, making service slightly more
frequent than for BEV models in the range.
Grey Import vs Official Dealer
Grey import Shark 6
units typically lack UAE-specific software calibration, Arabic navigation, and
summer thermal management routines. Insurance loading is 15–25% above standard;
some insurers decline PHEV grey imports entirely. Government incentives — Salik
tag, green parking, reduced registration fees — apply to official agency
vehicles only. The Shark 6's high-voltage system requires BYD-certified tooling
inaccessible to grey import owners through Al Futtaim's network.
Cost of Ownership
At AED 158,900, the
Shark 6 sits AED 30,000–60,000 below comparable European petrol dual-cabs. For
a buyer covering 20,000 km per year with a home wall box, annual electricity
cost for the electric-mode commuting portion is estimated under AED 1,500, versus
AED 8,000–12,000 for a diesel equivalent. Combined running cost savings are
estimated at AED 6,000–9,000 per year.
Insurance estimates
through official UAE channels range from AED 8,000 to AED 12,000 annually.
Annual PHEV servicing is approximately AED 2,000–3,000. Government incentives
include a free Salik tag (toll charges of AED 4–6 per gate still apply), green
parking bay access with a four-hour session limit, and reduced RTA registration
fees.
Depreciation risk is
moderate. BYD's brand standing has strengthened through 2024–2025 and Al
Futtaim's backing provides reassurance absent in grey-market alternatives.
Blade LFP chemistry resists thermal capacity fade in hot climates, supporting
long-term residual values. Three-year resale is estimated at 55–65% of purchase
price — comparable to Japanese ute benchmarks.
